ลัทธิบูชาบุคคลของเหมา เจ๋อตง เป็นส่วนสำคัญในการปกครองของเหมา เจ๋อตงเหนือสาธารณรัฐประชาชนจีนตั้งแต่ก่อตั้งประเทศใน ค.ศ. 1949 กระทั่งถึงแก่อสัญกรรมใน ค.ศ. 1976 รัฐบาลได้ใช้ และเทคนิคอื่น ๆ อีกมากมายเพื่อยกระดับสถานะของเหมาให้เป็นผู้นำที่เก่งกาจและไร้ที่ติ ผู้สามารถต่อต้านชาติตะวันตกและนำพาจีนให้เป็นแบบอย่างของลัทธิคอมมิวนิสต์^{[ ]}

หลังการปฏิวัติทางวัฒนธรรมสิ้นสุดลง เติ้ง เสี่ยวผิง และคณะได้ริเริ่มโครงการ "ปัวล่วนฝ่านเจิ้ง" ซึ่งทำให้การปฏิวัติทางวัฒนธรรมเป็นโมฆะและยกเลิก (รวมถึงห้าม) การสร้างลัทธิบูชาบุคคล
