ประเภทของงานวรรณกรรม (อังกฤษ: Literary genre; [ˈʒã:rə]) เช่น นวนิยาย หรือ เรื่องสั้นในสมัยคลาสสิก สมัยก่อน วรรณกรรมถูกแบ่งออกเป็นสามประเภทใหญ่ คือ

มหากาพย์ (Epic)
(Lyric)
(Dramatic poetry)

ซึ่งภายหลัง ประเภททที่สาม คือ กวีนิพนธ์บทละคร ถูกแบ่งต่อไปเป็น โศกนาฏกรรม (Tragedy) และ สุขนาฏกรรม (Comedy)

งานแต่ละประเภทมีกฎตายตัว จนกระทั่งถึงศตวรรษที่ 18 (ค.ศ. 1700 หรือ พ.ศ. 2243) ประเภทของวรรณกรรมได้ถูกแบ่งแยกอย่างชัดเจนมากขึ้น แต่หลังจากนั้นไม่นาน นักเขียนต่าง ๆ ก็ได้นำรูปแบบหลาย ๆ อย่าง มาผสมกันในงานเขียนของตัวเอง ทำให้งานเขียนของตัวเองนั้นมีเอกลักษณ์
