กปาลิกะเป็นอดีตธรรมเนียมแต่ไม่ตามปุราณะของลัทธิไศวะ ที่มีต้นกำเนิดในระหว่างศตวรรษที่ 7-8 คำนี้มาจากคำสันสกฤต ตรงกับคำว่า กบาล แปลว่า "กะโหลก" ดังนั้น กปาลิกะ แปลว่า "ผู้ถือกะโหลก"
กปาลิกะหมายถึงนักพรตลัทธิย่อยของลัทธิไศวะที่ซึ่งโดยธรรมเนียมแล้วเป็นผู้ถือตรีศูลที่มีกะโหลกปักอยู่ข้างบน (ขัฏวางคะ) และใช้กะโหลกมนุษย์เป็นบาตรขอทาน บูชาพระไภรวะ ซึ่งเป็นปางดุร้ายของพระศิวะ ผ่านการเลียนแบบพฤติกรรมและลักษณะของพระไภรวะในฐานะการปฏิบัติบูชา ใช้เถ้าถ่านจากป้ายตามร่างกาย, ไว้ผมยาวและ รวมถึงมีส่วนในพิธีกรรมที่ไม่เป็นที่ยอมรับของสังคม เช่น มีเพศสสัมพันธ์กับสตรีใน, , ทานทั้งเนื้อสัตว์และสุรา และถวายบูชาด้วยน้ำกาม
