IGF-1 ผลิตขึ้นหลัก ๆ ในตับภายใต้การกระตุ้นของโกรธฮอร์โมน (GH) โดย IGF-1 ส่วนใหญ่จะจับกับหนึ่งในหกชนิดของ binding proteins (IGF-BP) โดย IGFBP-1 ควบคุมโดยอินซูลิน IGF-1 ผลิตขึ้นมาตลอดชีวิต แต่อัตราการผลิต IGF-1 สูงสุดอยู่ระหว่าง(การเริ่มต้นวัยรุ่น)
