หินพัมมิช (อังกฤษ: Pumice) เป็นชนิดหนึ่ง ที่เกิดจากการเย็นตัวอย่างรวดเร็วของลาวาที่มีฟองแก๊สจำนวนมาก ทำให้เนื้อหินมีรูพรุนคล้ายฟองน้ำ มีสีจาง เช่น สีขาว สีเทา หรือสีเหลืองอ่อน มีน้ำหนักเบา และสามารถลอยน้ำได้

ลักษณะ

ลักษณะของหินพัมมิชมีดังนี้ เนื้อหินมีรูพรุนจำนวนมากทำให้มีลักษณะคล้ายฟองน้ำ มีสีจาง เช่น สีขาว สีเทา หรือสีเหลืองอ่อน น้ำหนัก เบามาก สามารถลอยน้ำได้ความแข็ง ไม่แข็งมาก เปราะและแตกหักง่าย

กระบวนการเกิด

หินพัมมิชเกิดจากการระเบิดของภูเขาไฟ เมื่อลาวาที่มีแก๊สจำนวนมากพุ่งขึ้นสู่บรรยากาศ ความดันที่ลดลงอย่างรวดเร็วทำให้แก๊สขยายตัวและเกิดเป็นฟองจำนวนมากในลาวา เมื่อลาวาเย็นตัวลงอย่างรวดเร็ว ฟองแก๊สเหล่านี้จะถูกกักไว้ในเนื้อหิน ทำให้เกิดเป็นรูพรุนจำนวนมาก
