ปลาออสการ์ เป็นชื่อสกุลของปลาน้ำจืดสกุลหนึ่ง ในวงศ์ปลาหมอสี (Cichlidae) ในวงศ์ย่อยปลาออสการ์ (Astronotinae) โดยใช้ชื่อสกุลว่า Astronotus (/แอส-โตร-โน-ตัส/) ซึ่งมาจากภาษากรีกคำว่า astra = ปลากระเบน และ noton = หลัง
เป็นปลาที่พบกระจายพันธุ์ในแม่น้ำหลายสายในทวีปอเมริกาใต้ เช่น แอมะซอน, ปารานา เป็นปลาที่กินเนื้อเป็นอาหาร มีอุปนิสัยดุร้ายก้าวร้าว มีริมฝีปากหนา ดวงตากลมโต ครีบหางกลม มีขนาดยาวได้ถึง 35 เซนติเมตร
ปลาออสการ์ เป็นปลาที่ใช้รับประทานอาหารของชาวพื้นเมืองในทวีปอเมริกาใต้ โดยมีชื่อเรียกเป็นภาษาท้องถิ่นว่า Acará-acu นอกจากนี้แล้วยังนิยมเลี้ยงเป็นปลาสวยงาม โดยเลี้ยงกันมาอย่างยาวนานไม่ต่ำกว่า 50 ปีมาแล้ว และถือว่าเป็นปลาหมอสีชนิดแรก ๆ ด้วยที่เข้ามาจำหน่ายในประเทศไทย เป็นปลาที่สามารถจำแนกเพศได้โดยดูจากช่องเพศที่บริเวณหลังครีบท้อง เพศผู้จะมีช่องเปิดของอวัยวะเพศยื่นออกมา ในเพศเมียมีลักษณะกลม เพศผู้มีครีบหลังใหญ่กว่าเพศเมีย ในขณะที่เพศเมียครีบหลังค่อนข้างกลม เป็นปลาที่สามารถเพาะขยายพันธุ์ได้ในที่เลี้ยง
การจำแนก
- Astronotus crassipinnis เป็นชนิดที่หายากในแวดวงปลาสวยงาม เมื่อโตเต็มที่จะมีขนาดเล็กกว่าชนิดที่เป็นที่นิยมกัน แต่มีลวดลายเป็นสีขาวสลับดำเป็นปล้อง ๆ
- Astronotus ocellatus (ปลาออสการ์) เป็นชนิดที่นิยมเลี้ยงกันหลากหลาย จนปัจจุบันได้มีการเพาะขยายพันธุ์จนได้สีสันต่าง ๆ สวยแปลกตาจากปลาที่พบในธรรมชาติ หรือมีครีบพริ้วยาวสวยงาม
