ความเชื่อนี้รับมาจากมโนภาพคตินิยมเชื้อชาติทางวิทยาศาสตร์ในอดีต กำเนิดขึ้นจากสิ่งพิมพ์เผยแพร่โดยมะซะฮิโกะ โนะมิในคริสต์ทศวรรษ 1970 ประชาคมวิทยาศาสตร์และวิชาการไม่สนใจความเชื่อดังกล่าวโดยมองว่าเป็นสิ่งงมงายหรือวิทยาศาสตร์เทียมเนื่องจากขาดพื้นฐานหลักฐานที่พิสูจน์ได้หรือการอ้างอิงเกณฑ์ที่ทดสอบได้ แม้การวิจัยความเชื่อมโยงเหตุกรรมระหว่างหมู่โลหิตและบุคลิกภาพมีจำกัด แต่การวิจัยได้แสดงเป็นที่ยุติว่าไม่มีความเชื่อมโยงอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ
