ไมโครซอฟท์ เวิร์ด เป็นโปรแกรมประมวลคำ ออกแบบโดยไมโครซอฟท์ เปิดตัวเป็นครั้งแรกในปี ค.ศ. 1983 ภายใต้ชื่อ มัลติ-ทูล เวิร์ด สำหรับระบบปฏิบัติการ โดยมีเวอร์ชันอื่นๆ ออกมาอีกภายหลังเพื่อทำงานเขียนสำหรับแพลตฟอร์มอื่นๆ อาทิเช่น ไอบีเอ็มพีซีรันบนดอส (1983), แอปเปิล แมคอินทอช (1984), เอที&ที (1985), (1986), , (โอเอส/2), และไมโครซอฟท์ วินโดวส์ (1989) โดยเป็นองค์ประกอบหนึ่งของซอฟต์แวร์ระบบไมโครซอฟท์ ออฟฟิศ ซึ่งเป็นผลิตภัณฑ์ที่ขายแยกต่างหาก และรวมอยู่ใน เวอร์ชันปัจจุบัน คือ ไมโครซอฟท์ เวิร์ด 2016 สำหรับวินโดว์ และ 2016 สำหรับแมค (Microsoft Office 2016 for Mac) นอกจากนี้ยังมีใน Word Mobile ซึ่งเป็น freeware ในกลุ่ม ไมโครซอฟท์ ออฟฟิส โมบายล์ ในระบบปฏิบัติการ Windows 10, Windows Phone, iOS และ Android

ประวัติ
จุดกำเนิด และ การเติบโต: 1981 ถึง 1995
ในปี 1981 ไมโครซอฟท์ได้จ้าง นักพัฒนาหลักของ โปรแกรมประมวลค่าGUI ตัวแรก ซึ่งพัฒนาบน Simonyi เริ่มสร้างโปรแกรมประมวลค่าที่ชื่อว่ามัลติ-ทูล เวิร์ด และต่อมาได้จ้าง อดีตพนักงานฝึกหัดบริษัทXerox เพื่อมาเป็นsoftware engineer หลัก จนถึงปัจจุบัน
