เมืองตั้งอยู่ทางฝั่งตะวันตกของแม่น้ำคงคา เป็นศูนย์กลางการค้าและธุรกิจที่สำคัญของอินเดียเหนือ มีโรงงานผลิตขนสัตว์แห่งแรกของอินเดีย บรรษัทอินเดียของบริเตน (British India Corporation) ก่อตั้งขึ้นในปี 1879 โดย เมืองเป็นที่รู้จักในฐานะ "เมืองหนังของโลก" (The Leather City of the World) และยังมีชื่อเล่นว่า "แมนเชสเตอร์แห่งอินเดีย"
