IC 342 (หรือในชื่อ Caldwell 5) เป็นดาราจักรชนิดก้นหอยในกลุ่มดาวยีราฟ ตั้งอยู่ค่อนข้างใกล้กับดาราจักรทางช้างเผือก แม้จะมีขนาดและความสว่างสูง ดาราจักรนี้ตั้งอยู่ในเขตที่มีฝุ่นเยอะใกล้กับศูนย์กลางดาราจักรของเรา ทำให้สามารถมองดูได้ยาก ทำให้มีชื่อเล่นว่า "ดาราจักรที่ถูกซ่อน" (The Hidden Galaxy) แม้ว่าสามารถตรวจจับได้อย่างง่ายดายแม้ในกล้องส่องทางไกล แต่ฝุ่นโมเลกุลอวกาศทำให้ยากต่อการกำหนดระยะทางที่แม่นยำ การประมาณปัจจุบันอยู่ระหว่างจากประมาณ 7 ล้านปีแสงถึงประมาณ 11 ล้านปีแสง

ดาราจักรนี้ถูกค้นพบโดย ใน 1892 เป็นหนึ่งในดาราจักรที่สว่างที่สุดใน (IC 342/Maffei Group) กลุ่มดาราจักรที่ใกล้กับกลุ่มท้องถิ่นมากที่สุด ซึ่ง เอ็ดวิน ฮับเบิล ในตอนแรกได้มีสมมติฐานว่าเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของกลุ่มท้องถิ่น แต่ในภายหลังได้ถูกยืนยันว่าไม่เป็นสมาชิกอยู่
