เรื่องย่อ
เมลวิน ยูดอล (แจ็ก นิโคลสัน) นักเขียนนวนิยายรักมีชื่อ ที่เป็นโรคย้ำคิดย้ำคำ กลัวความสกปรก เหยียดผิว และปากร้าย มีนิสัยเห็นแก่ตัว และชอบพูดจาถากถางใคร ๆ ให้เจ็บใจ เป็นที่เอือมระอาต่อเพื่อนบ้าน โดยเฉพาะไซมอน (เกร็ก คินเนียร์) จิตรกรเกย์ข้างห้อง ที่เลี้ยงหมาตัวเล็ก ๆ ชื่อ เวอร์เดล
ทุกวันเมลวินจะต้องไปกินอาหารที่ร้านเดิม ที่โต๊ะตัวเดิม แต่ด้วยนิสัยปากร้าย ทำให้ไม่มีพนักงานเสิร์ฟคนไหนอยากบริการเขา มีเพียงคนเดียวคือ แครอล (เฮเลน ฮันท์) ที่รับมือกับเมลวินได้ วันหนึ่งแครอลไม่มาทำงาน เมลวินจึงตามไปที่บ้าน เพราะถ้าหากเธอไม่มาเสิร์ฟอาหารให้ ก็ไม่มีใครในร้านยินดีบริการเขา เมลวินพบว่าลูกชายของแครอลป่วยเป็นโรคภูมิแพ้และหอบหืด เขาจึงเสนอให้หมอนอร์แมน เบตส์ (แฮโรลด์ รามิส) สามีของบรรณาธิการที่ตีพิมพ์นวนิยายของเขา ไปรักษาลูกชายของแครอล เพื่อให้เธอกลับมาทำงานตามปกติ
