ต้นกำเนิด
ภาษาเฮอร์เตวินถูกจัดเป็นภาษาหนึ่งต่างหากโดย Otto Jastrow เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2513 และเขาได้อธิบายเกี่ยวกับภาษานี้ในอักสองปีต่อมา ลักษณะเด่นของภาษานี้ที่ต่างจากภาษาแอราเมอิกใหม่สำเนียงตะวันออกด้วยกันคือ ไม่มีการแยกสรรพนามชี้เฉพาะ “นี่” กับ “นั่น” แต่ใช้กลุ่มของสรรพนามที่ครอบคลุมทั้งสองความหมายคือ awa aya และ ani มีการสร้างคำสรรพนามสำหรับคำว่า “สิ่งนี้ที่นี่” คือ oha eha และ anhi ผู้พูดภาษาเฮอร์เตวินจะพูดภาษาเคิร์ดได้ด้วย และอาจจะพูดภาษาอื่นๆได้อีก ภาษานี้เขียนด้วยอักษรซีเรียค แต่เกือบจะไม่มีวรรณกรรมใดๆเหลืออยู่เลย ผู้พูดภาษานี้ใช้ภาษาซีเรียคเป็นภาษาทางศาสนา
