ภูมิหลัง
เมื่ออิตาลีประกาศสงครามในวันที่ 10 มิถุนายน ค.ศ. 1940 นั้น กองกำลังของอิตาลีหาได้เตรียมความพร้อมสำหรับการทำสงครามระยะยาวในแอฟริกาเหนือหรือในแอฟริกาตะวันออกไม่ ด้วยสภาพการณ์ดังกล่าว เบนิโต มุสโสลินี ผู้เผด็จการของอิตาลี จึงมีคำสั่งให้ปฏิบัติการรุนแรงอย่างมีขอบเขตเพื่อยึดครองดินแดนตามแนวชายแดนของอียิปต์ ซูดาน และเคนยา
